Volcanos

Masaya Volcano (approx. 35 min from Casa Castillo)

It is one of  nineteen volcanoes in Nicaragua and one of eight that are active. Masaya is easily assessable by vehicle through the National Park and from the vantage point in the park you can look down through the sulphurous haze into the red lava below. It is exceptionally beautiful to see this at night. The most major eruptions were in 1670 and 1772 and smaller eruptions happened in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2008 and 2016. You will notice vehicles back into parking spots in case an eruption begins so you can evacuate quickly. Modern seismic monitors give early indication of volcanic activity.

Masaya City (about 20 min from Casa Castillo)

This is the third largest city in Nicaragua and home to a wonderful 1900’s Mercado de Artesanias market, where you will find plenty of  handmade hammocks, footwear, clothing, furniture and wooden crafts to name a few. Take a tour around the city to view some of the old churches from the 1600’s.

Mombacho Volcano (45 min from Casa Castillo)

Mombacho is a protected nature reserve and a popular tourist attraction. At the highest elevation it is home to what is called a dwarf and cloud forest. It remains an active volcano, with the last known eruption in 1570. Take one of the two hiking trails depending on your physical level and you will see not only great views of Granada and Lake Nicaragua but some 700 plus species of plants and varieties of orchids. The dwarf forest can only be seen on the more difficult path, which at one point is a 45 degree climb for approximately 2 miles. Enjoy!

Volcano Cerro Negro

Located just outside the city of Leon, Cerro Negro is an active volcano in the Cordillera de los Maribios mountain range in Nicaragua, about 10 km from the village of Malpaisillo. It is a very new volcano, the youngest in Central America, having first appeared in April 1850. One unusual aspect of several eruptions has been the emission of ash from the top of the cone. The black ash has created an ideal boarding run for adventure enthusiasts. Don’t miss out on this adventure as it is the only place in the world you can do volcano boarding!
